Current League membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.

The purpose of the Horizon League is to provide an athletics league through which institutions may maintain athletics programs in conformity with the dignity and purpose of higher education which shall be conducted so as to generate practices and attitudes in students which produce physical fitness, academic development and moral character.

The Horizon League served as co-host for the 2006 NCAA Men's Final Four in cooperation with Butler University.

The Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the chief executive officers of the nine member institutions; the corporation's registered agent is Jonathan B. LeCrone, Commissioner.
